    Because, to mark the sixtieth birthday of Philippe Herreweghe, his record company is keen not only to pay tribute to him, but also to accompany him in his current aspirations. In fact it is the maestro himself who made the selection of 28 tracks from a discography including nearly 100 records! His necessarily subjective choices end up sketching a revealing portrait of an interpreter equally at home in Renaissance polyphony, a scherzo by Bruckner, or the . The splendid film directed by Sandrine Willems (DVD) only serves to confirm this: she followed the maestro through a series of working sessions at the Saintes Festival, by turns rhetorician in a Bach cantata and jocular in Beethoven’s Ninth . . .
