The art of German Lieder: Essential song cycles

The world of German Lied (meaning 'song') has given rise to a number of song cycles: collections of Lieder strung together end to end. At times, a particular poet is the literary thread between the successive songs; at other times, the cycle is structured as a plausible narrative, a succession of sentimental states represented, for example, in the case of the Winterreise, by the theme of travel. The great German Romantic composers left us masterful song cycles: here they are.
