Drinking (and Eating) Songs.
Flemish Renaissance, French Renaissance: on the face of it there are many fundamental differences between these two worlds. Yet when a Flemish composer like Gombert evokes hare coursing in La Chasse au lièvre, we can hear every detail, down to the cries of the animals, as in the most Parisian of chansons! This recording aims to break down the barriers between the two styles, with a programme that can only be described as… appetising. The great names of the period (Clemens non Papa, Certon, Sermisy) are here along with anonymous, now forgotten masters, brought together to sing the praises of good cheer and vintage wine: "High, high I raise my glass" is their motto, and the Ensemble Clément Janequin is their herald.
