Known until the 1790s as Sonatas for pianoforte with violin or violoncello accompaniment, Haydn's Piano Trios reflect the growing importance accorded to the keyboard - especially the pianoforte - at the end of the 18th century. Listening to these pieces from the early years of the form one becomes aware of their astonishing modernity, presaging the works of Beethoven and Schubert.
Patrick Cohen plays a fortepiano by Anton Walter, Vienna, 1790; Erich Höbarth plays a violin by G. Guarnerius filius Andreae, Cremona, 1683; Christophe Coin plays a cello by C. A. Testore, 1758.
This title was released for the first time in 1988.
