    A Great Romantic Work.
If the myth of Faust inspired numerous composers (Berlioz, Gounod, Liszt, Mahler...), their confrontations with it were to encounter different fates from popular acceptance to utter rejection by their audiences and by posterity.
Schumann certainly did not choose either the easy nor the obvious way in opting for the second and much more esoteric part of the tragedy in his Scenes from Faust.
The composition of the work was spread over seven years, but his boldness paid off, because it gave rise to a true masterpiece of Romanticism, culminating in the famous and impressive final "Chorus mysticus".
