A story of desire and death, The Miraculous Mandarin is one of Bartók's most Expressionist works. Its subject provoked scandal and censorship when it was first performed. This is the premiere recording of the original score restored in 1999 by Péter, Bartók's younger son. This version, containing 30 bars previously missing, also restores dynamics, bowings and other performing directions from the autograph.
This title was released for the first time in 2002.
