Excerpt:
English monarchs of the 16th century had a particular love for the lute and often employed a “Royal Lewter.” Court composers like Philip van Wilder and John Johnson delighted Henry VIII and Elizabeth I with elaborate sets of variations based on broadside ballads, or refined instrumental arrangements of rustic dances. Star lutenist Paul O’Dette offers a dazzling selection of these elegant miniatures.
