NEW HARMONIA MUNDI RELEASES FOR APRIL 2008
In Scattered Rhymes, a world premiere recording and the new release from esteemed conductor Paul Hillier, The Orlando Consort, and the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, contemporary composer Tarik O'Regan pairs his 2006 work Scattered Rythmes with Guillaume de Machaut's Messe de Notre Dame of 1364. The former combines two fourteenth-century texts on the intertwining of sensuous and divine love, the medieval themes of which are reinforced by de Machaut. This inventive program also includes two motets: Guillaume Dufay's Ave regina Coelorum and Gavin Bryars' Super Flumina.
O'Regan is a two-time British Composer Award winner and has held the Fulbright Chester Schirmer Fellowship in Music Composition at Columbia, and a Radcliffe Institute Fellowship at Harvard. Grammy Award winner for Arvo Pärt's Da Pacem, as conductor of the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, Paul Hillier will take over the role of Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the National Chamber choir of Ireland in June 2008. The award-winning Orlando Consort, formed in 1988, collaborates with leading musicologists and has been called the most imaginative champion of vocal music on the early music circuit.

2008 BBC MUSIC AWARD WINNERS FOR HARMONIA MUNDI
harmonia mundi picks up three BBC Music Magazine Awards out of eleven categories. Tenor Mark Padmore won the Vocal Award for Handel's As Steals The Morn, a recital in which he "seduces the listener with his shading, dynamic range and commitment to the text". The Jerusalem Quartet took the Chamber Award for their Shostakovich Quartets Nos 6, 8 & 11, "bringing a new approach to well-known repertoire...[with a] daunting tonal range". Lastly, Paul Hillier, Theatre of Voices, and Ian Dearden (sound diffusion) scored the award for Technical Excellence in Recording, with Stockhausen's Stimmung. "Harmonia Mundi's sound engineers came up trumps in a masterful recording that, says the jury, 'contrives to place us inside this remarkable sonic event'" (BBC Music Magazine). |
