The Fairy Queen, semi-opéra d'après le Songe d'une nuit d'été (1692)
Fort du succès immense qu’avaient connu Dido &Aeneas etKing Arthur, Purcell porta à la scène en 1692 le fameux Songe d’une nuit d’été de Shakespeare sous ce nouveau titre de The Fairy Queen (La Reine des fées). Il s’agit en fait d’un “semi-opéra” ou “opéra à dialogues”, la musique n’intervenant qu’à l’occasion de scènes particulières. Mais c’est ainsi que ce Songe d’une nuit d’été visité par “l’Orphée anglais” devint quasiment aussi célèbre que la pièce qui lui avait donné naissance : scènes d’amour, scènes surnaturelles et un sens inné de l’humour musical confèrent à cette savoureuse imbrication théâtrale un parfum irrésistible.
Ce titre est paru pour la première fois en 1989.
