C'est à son retour d'une visite dans les camps de concentration allemands avec Yehudi Menuhin, en 1945, que Britten réalisa enfin ce projet qu'il caressait depuis longtemps : sa mise en musique des sonnets religieux de John Donne, poète et prédicateur anglais (1572-1631), parvient à traduire admirablement leur savant dosage entre passion et rigueur intellectuelle.
