Gustavo Gimeno is Music Director of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (a title he has held since 2020) and former Music Director of the Luxembourg Philharmonic (2015–2025), as well as Music Director Designate of the Teatro Real in Madrid, where he assumes his role in 2025/26. He is also regularly invited to lead the world’s most renowned ensembles, notable among which are the Berliner Philharmoniker, Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Bamberger Symphoniker, Israel Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio-France, Münchner Philharmoniker, Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, NHK Symphony Orchestra, Boston Symphony Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra (Washington, D.C.), the Cleveland Orchestra, and Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. He has a special relationship with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Amsterdam, where he began his career as a percussionist.
Born in Valencia (Spain), Gustavo Gimeno began his international conducting career in 2012 – while still a member of the Concertgebouw Orchestra – as an assistant to Mariss Jansons. He gathered essential experience as an assistant to Bernard Haitink and Claudio Abbado, who mentored him intensely.
Having previously made recordings for Pentatone, Gustavo Gimeno now records exclusively for harmonia mundi. In February 2024, Gimeno and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra released their first album together that featured Messiaen’s “Turangalîla-Symphonie,” followed by a Stravinsky album (“Pulcinella” and “The Fairy’s Kiss”) in February 2025. Other repertoire recorded for the label includes Rossini’s Stabat Mater, Puccini’s “Messa di Gloria,” and Stravinsky’s ballets “The Firebird” and “Apollon Musagète” with the Luxembourg Philharmonic.
