Matthias Goerne

Biography

Born in Weimar, Matthias Goerne studied with Hans-Joachim Beyer in Leipzig, then with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. In a few short years he has gained worldwide recognition as a lieder singer. He is a regular guest at international festivals and concert halls such as Carnegie Hall in New York and the Wigmore Hall in London. Among his musical partners are Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Leif-Ove Andsnes, Alfred Brendel, Christoph Eschenbach, and Elisabeth Leonskaja. Since his operatic debut at the Salzburg Festival in 1997, as Papageno under the direction of Christoph von Dohnányi, Matthias Goerne has appeared as a guest artist at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London, the Teatro Real in Madrid, the Opernhaus in Zurich, the Semperoper in Dresden, the Metropolitan Opera in New York and the Saito Kinen Festival in Japan, among other houses. His repertoire ranges from Papageno, Wolfram (Tannhäuser) and Eugene Onegin to the title roles in Alban Berg’s Wozzeck and Aribert Reimann’s Lear. Matthias Goerne works with such orchestras as the Berlin Philharmonic, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam, the London Philharmonic and the Philharmonia Orchestra in London, the Orchestre National de France, the Orchestre de Paris, and, in the USA, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, The Philadelphia Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. From 2001 until 2005 Matthias Goerne was honorary professor of song interpretation at the Robert-Schumann-Hochschule in Düsseldorf. He is an honorary member of the Royal Academy of Music in London.
