Prokofiev's first 'serious' composition was a multi-movement violin sonata written under the tutelage of his teacher Glière, who first introduced the child prodigy to the instrument. Prokofiev's violin compositions speak in a unique lyrical idiom that draws out new colors from the instrument and shows an instinctive understanding of its capabilities. The Five Melodies, Op.35 bis, were revised for the violin at the instigation of Pawel Kochanski, dedicatee of Prokofiev's First Violin Concerto and former owner of the Stradivarius played by Pierre Amoyal on this recording.
