Les maîtres de la chanson polyphonique

Masters of the polyphonic chanson

Besides the madrigal, the frottola, the villanella, the canzonetta, and the air de cour... there is the polyphonic chanson: Franco-Flemish in origin, it closely adheres to Renaissance models. Spiritual in the North, amorous or satirical in Paris, the chanson exploits intricately elaborated techniques that link it to the Italian madrigal until the end of the 16th century, but it deviates significantly in terms of its poetry and rhetoric: here rule all manner of onomatopoeia, word painting, 'cries' of the street vendors, and even some 'battles.' An entire musical universe to be discovered, though it is nowadays often neglected, unjustly!
