chant du peuple

Songs of the people

Songs of the people are the songs sung in the streets or heard every day. They are distinguished from the so-called traditional music by their spontaneity and the symbols they so often represent. Incorporated into numerous pieces of classical music, they often embody the most political element of a given work, especially on the operatic stage. Without their more or less discreet appearances at the core of any discussion about classical music, how could the masses have recognized themselves in the revolutionary impulses of a composer such as Mozart, Beethoven, or Verdi?
